The 28-year-old reliever Stephan will be sidelined for at least one year and up to 16 months due to surgery needed for a bone bruise. He had a 4.06 ERA and two saves in 71 games last season, and is part of a Cleveland bullpen dealing with multiple injuries, including right-handers Karinchak, Lively, Curry, and lefty Hentges on the injured list, as well as starter Gavin Williams with elbow inflammation.
