Haslams may purchase Brook Park land for a stadium, a similar move to what Art Modell did half a century ago.

– Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam are considering purchasing 176 acres of land in Brook Park to build a domed stadium as their current stadium lease ends in 2028.
– This move is similar to former Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell, who purchased land in Strongsville in the 1970s causing panic that the stadium could be moved from downtown.

– Both Modell and the Haslams insisted that their land purchases outside of Cleveland were not negotiating tactics.
– Discussions about the future of the Browns stadium in both cases were part of larger discussions about revitalizing downtown.
– The Haslams are seeking between $1 billion and $2 billion for stadium upgrades or construction, a much larger sum than Modell’s $10 million ask in 1973.
– The Haslams have plans for downtown revitalization, such as a $230 million land bridge connecting City Hall to the lakefront and a downtown tax district for waterfront redevelopment.
