Louis Gossett Jr., a renowned actor, passed away in Santa Monica, California at the age of 87. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Marine Corps Sgt. Emil Foley in “An Officer and a Gentleman.” Gossett also starred in “Roots” and “The Color Purple” among other notable roles. He had a successful stage and screen career, appearing in over 100 TV shows and winning a Primetime Emmy Award for his role as Fiddler in “Roots.” Gossett was known for his military roles, including in “Enemy Mine” and “Iron Eagle.” Director Taylor Hackford cast Gossett in “An Officer and a Gentleman” because he wanted to depict a Black character with authority over white characters in American cinema, leading to the groundbreaking portrayal of Sgt. Foley.
