Moonshine cave long rumored to be under historic NASCAR speedway possibly found in North Carolina

– A potential moonshine cave was discovered under the grandstands of North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina during a routine cleaning and inspection.
– The cave was found underneath the original concrete in Section N, revealing a 700-square-foot open area.
– Speedway Motorsports officials have not found a still, but found a small cave and an interior wall believed to be a location for making illegal liquor and hiding from the law.
– Around 600 seats have been removed from the grandstands, and the next step for Speedway Motorsports staff is foundation repair and concrete replacement before NASCAR All-Star Race Week in May.
– North Wilkesboro Speedway was one of the original NASCAR racetracks and closed in 1996 but reopened last year after restoration.
– Moonshine has historical ties to NASCAR and North Carolina, with many early stars starting as bootleggers in the Appalachian mountains. Junior Johnson, a racing legend, was a well-known bootlegger in Wilkes County.
